Difference between neatsfoot oil and mink oil

Neatsfoot oil is used to soften and condition leather, it comes in liquid form and does not create a barrier for moisture. It tends to darken leather over time as well.

Mink oil comes in both a paste and an oil. As a paste this oil is ideal for water proofing leather. It tends to dull the finish of leather as well which may not be desired however re application is not necessary for quite some time after application.

Mink oil is derived from a fat layer beneath a mink's skin while neatsfoot oil is derived from a cows hooves.

  • Neat is an old word for cattle. Neatsfoot oil is made from the lower part of the legs of cattle, bones, skin and all, but not including the hooves. The hooves are removed first and used to manufacture glue.
